Crash Wall

A crash wall is usually required under certain conditions for protection of piers and overhead structures. There are various practices by different states and agencies, and AREAMA provides minimum geometric guidelines for crash wall of a pier supporting a bridge over a railway.

In LEAP Bridge Enterprise, crash wall is handled in the following manner. From the standpoint of analysis, crash wall is part of the Crash Wall Footing, so the existing workflow for footing in LEAP Bridge Enterprise is still applicable. Users are allowed to define impact loads along the height of crash wall. From the standpoint of design, vertical steel reinforcement in the crash wall is designed based on column model of the crash wall, which is subject to biaxial bending combined with axial compression. Horizontal steel reinforcement in crash wall and footing cap is designed based on an inverted Tee beam model, in which footing cap is as the flange of the Tee beam and crash wall as web of the Tee beam.
